Pat Yourself on the Back: I Think I Need an Upper.

So far I have carried the least weight on this blog when it comes to inspiring posts. While this may not be the most original of ideas, I think it will be fun for us.

A lot of our Lost Year revolves around failure - around those plans and ideas we had about Real Life that just went down the toilet. And, let's face it, it's not fun to write about your failures all the time. So tell me: what have you done, whether it be from the beginning of your Lost Year or from just earlier today, that you're proud of? That makes you feel accomplished? And I mean in even the tiniest, smallest of ways - or the big fat ways, if that's what floats your boat! (Floating....big and fat....oh, I'm awful.)

Write down as many things as you want, anything that you want - from "Ohmycrap I figured out what I want to do with my life!!!" to "I tried mussels today, and I didn't like them just like I knew I wouldn't (and I spit them all over the table) but dammit at least I tried them!"

Too bad I still haven't had the guts to try eating a mussel. Slime + food = just doesn't sound pleasant.

Mussels aren't slimey. I don't think. I think you're thinking of snails.

Ask City Girl. I know she's eaten snails and now has a thing against them.

oh, snails and mussels are both molluscs, and molluscs are known for having a high concentration oliogosaccharides in their flesh: aka, slime. (Makes extracting their DNA a little tricky.)

besides, you're eating the whole organism, digestive and excretory systems included. Gross!

When have I eaten snails?? I don't recall this.

maybe you blocked it out of your memory? :p

You told me you'd eaten snails! I swear! And that they were just chewy butter! But not chewy butter you'd do again. Not that you ever really "did" the snail in the first place.

I think when I was thinking of the non-slime mussel it has to do with how they're cooked. See, when it's dead it stops making those oliogosaccharides and you can cook them out.

*continues to pretend like she uses both the word oliogosaccharides and various cooking techniques daily*

Hmm...I really think you are thinking of someone else. I don't believe I have ever eaten snails. I have, however, eaten mussels, and I don't like them. Mostly because all the little organs are there for your viewing and chewing pleasure. I do like clams though. In fact, I like most seafoods other than mussels. Plus, the name just sounds gross. Like, who came up with that? Ew.

Clams are good. Eat clams instead.

Are those the ones that you have to be really careful when you cook or they can make you extremely sick?

Maybe we should stick to shrimp. And scallops.

I think it's oyesters that make you really sick, because you're supposed to eat them raw. But any shellfish can make you sick if not cooked properly. Anyone remember that part of "Drop Dead Gorgeous"?? Fabulous movie.

I am amazed at how long this exchange about seafood has gone on.

Yeah, I totally spelled oysters wrong. Go me.

Osyters! They're the slimey ones! You're supposed to slurp them, yes?

Are they supposed to be the aphrodisiac?
